On some beach, somewhere

This year has been a year of firsts. My first of most things without my mom. I’m finding that alongside the bitter endings, are beautiful beginnings. Every special day continues to immortalize my mom in a way that makes it easier to continue living our lives.

My mom’s last words were in conversation with a family friend of ours. She looked at him, he was visibly upset, and she said, “Don’t be sad.” Soon after that she closed her eyes for good.

If I’m being entirely honest this fell flat for me at first. I understood it as my mom continuing to do what she always did, which was trying to make the people around her feel better. I now understand it as her permission to move forward. Her request that we don’t stop living alongside her.

This year has been devastating. I consistently feel a deep longing for someone who I will never physically see again. And at the same time, I know I have to continue moving. I have to try to find joy and purpose in the world without the person who brought me into it.

So alongside all of the bitter endings this year has brought, I have no choice but to recognize the beautiful things this year has shown me. I’m looking forward to seeing what next year shows me.

Last Sunday, I lost my mom to cancer. She was my best friend. It still doesn’t feel real. The past week has been filled with unimaginable grief and also unimaginable love. I’m grateful to the mass amount of people who have been committed to supporting my mom and our family. I’m grateful for my family and the courage it takes to be vulnerable with each other the way we have been the last two weeks. I will miss her everyday for the rest of my life.
